"Buck" Baker

Buck came to us in October of 1999, a return from a family in the process of breaking up.  He wasn't handling the schedule changes and family strife very well and was making his unhappiness known by peeing in the house.  We had already fostered several greyhounds, and we've had two nongreyhounds for years, so we decided we'd give 7-year old Buck a chance.  Buck has never peed in our house, he is safe around our two cats, and he has he done nothing bad with the exception of trying to make off with a piece of pecan pie early in his stay with us and being the suspect in the theft of a chocolate orange at Christmas...

The adoption group I volunteered with at the time occasionally got interest in Buck, but nothing serious.  By mid-November 1999, though, I was starting to fear every phone call and e-mail.  By the end of November I was in a panic.  I finally said to Buck in a very loud stage whisper in my husband's presence that Buck should tell Daddy that he could give me Buck for Christmas.  To my profound relief, my husband told me if I really wanted him that badly, I could keep him.  And that is how Buck came to reside permanently with us, and eternally in my heart.

Side notes:  Buck, sired by Itsa Sompin Good and born to Bold Avenger in 9/92, raced successfully from May 1994 to January 1997as Fever River Buck, spending over half his career as a Grade A racer.  He raced at 84-85 pounds, and in retirement looks sleek and fabulous at 91 pounds.
